Paul A. Tichauer has been Chair of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators’ Canada Branch since its inception and has been a member of the Standing Committee of the ICC International Center for ADR in Paris since 2016. Dr. Tichauer’s recent arbitral appointments as a Member Arbitrator include serving as an ICC-appointed Sole Arbitrator of a multi-party, international dispute concerning the failure of an aircraft jet engine and as a Public Arbitrator for FINRA.

Paul Tichauer is an independent arbitrator focusing on disputes in the industrial, materials, manufacturing, engineering and technology sectors. He has been Chair of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators’ Canada Branch since its inception in 2017 and is a member of the Standing Committee of the ICC International Center for ADR in Paris since 2016. This committee supports the Centre in the recommendation and appointment of Experts and Neutrals as well as its administration of Expert Proceedings. Dr. Tichauer’s recent arbitral appointments include serving as an ICC-appointed Sole Arbitrator of a multi-party, international dispute concerning the failure of an aircraft jet engine and as a Public Arbitrator for FINRA – the Financial Regulatory Authority in the USA.

In 2018, Dr. Tichauer was designated as the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators’ representative at UNCITRAL Working Group lll on Investor-State Dispute Settlement reform as well as UNCITRAL Working Group ll on the Settlement of Commercial Disputes. In 2019, he was appointed by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators as the sole Branch Chair on its Governance Review Working Party. Dr. Tichauer was also invited to join the Toronto Commercial Arbitration Society’s Working Group on the reform of domestic arbitration legislation for the Province of Ontario.

Prior to becoming a commercial arbitrator, Dr. Tichauer enjoyed a long and successful C-Suite career with companies providing highly-engineered products and services. These include: industrial gases; welding consumables and equipment; specialty metals; packaging machinery and systems; automotive parts: metal forming; aircraft components. He was CEO of IRDI, the Industrial Research and Development Institute, and started his career as a research engineer with Praxair (formerly the industrial gas division of Union Carbide). Dr. Tichauer worked in the USA for 14 years and has had direct operating responsibility for companies in Europe for a number of years.

A Rhodes Scholar, Dr. Tichauer received a BEng (Metallurgy) from McGill University, an MA (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) from Oxford University and a PhD (Metallurgy) from MIT. He also holds an MBA (Finance) with Distinction from Pace University in New York.
