Hugh Meighen is a partner of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP in Toronto and maintains a dedicated arbitration practice in a broad range of industries, including energy, mining, construction, telecommunications, oil & gas, sports and entertainment, IT, and logistics. His counsel experience includes representing Canadian and international clients in proceedings under all leading arbitral rules and institutions, including the ICC, LCIA, UNCITRAL, SIAC, ICDR, AAA/ICDR, DIAC, and ADRIC. He has acts as arbitrator as a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb). He has received national and international recognition in all leading directories for his leading arbitration work and is active in various international arbitration organizations, including as a member of the ICC Commission. In 2023, Lexology: Arbitration described Hugh as an “experienced and driven arbitrator”.

Hugh has more than 15 years of experience of dedicated arbitration work as arbitrator and in representing clients before numerous tribunals in high-value and complex arbitrations arising from a range of industry sectors, including telecommunications, defence, energy, mining, engineering, sports and entertainment, insurance, logistics, IT, and real property, and under a variety of rules including those of the ICC, LCIA, UNCITRAL, SIAC, ICDR, AAA/ICDR, DIAC, and ADRIC. As part of this experience, Hugh has successfully represented clients in over 30 arbitrations and before numerous domestic and international arbitral tribunals. He has also acted as sole arbitrator in several international and domestic arbitrations. He is recognized in Chambers Canada, Lexology, Lexpert, Benchmark Litigation, Legal 500, and Best Lawyers for his arbitration work.

In 2021, Who's Who Legal: Arbitration named him one of ten “Most Highly Regarded” partners under 45 in the Americas. As a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb), Hugh has acted as a sole arbitrator in several international and domestic arbitrations. He was ranked as one of Canada’s leading lawyers under 40 in 2022 by Lexpert.

Prior to joining BLG, Hugh practiced for five years in London and Dubai in the international arbitration group of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP. He was previously assistant legal counsel at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, where he was the McGill Law fellow and supported arbitral tribunals presiding over international investment arbitrations. He holds degrees from Princeton University and McGill University and is qualified in Ontario (2010) and New York (2011).

In addition to frequently publishing articles and book chapters on arbitration, Hugh co-authored the Guide to the PCA Arbitration Rules, published by Oxford University Press, and has been adjunct professor of two courses (international commercial arbitration and sports arbitration) at Osgoode Hall Law School.
