Domestic and international arbitrations have always been a significant focus of John’s commercial litigation practice. A partner at Goodmans LLP for more than 30 years, John acted as counsel and arbitrator in numerous domestic and international arbitrations, including those that fall under the rules of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the American Arbitration Association, UNCITRAL Model Law, the Zurich Chamber of Commerce, and the Ontario and British Columbia International Commercial Arbitration Acts.
A leader in the Canadian arbitration community, John is a longtime member of several arbitration panels, including the Canadian Committee of the ICC and ICDR. He is also the past director of the Advocates’ Society. Early in his career, John attended Harvard Law School’s well-known Negotiation Workshop. In 1996, as chair of the Advocates’ Society’s Arbitration and Mediation Committee, John served as a member of Ontario’s Bench and Bar steering committee that introduced mandatory mediation for all civil actions in Ontario. Through the Advocates’ Society he was also instrumental in introducing the Harvard Mediation Workshop to Ontario’s legal community.
John is regularly recognized by legal publications as a leading practitioner in corporate commercial litigation and international commercial arbitration.
