The Honourable Robert P. Armstrong, K.C., served as a Justice for the Ontario Court of Appeal for eleven years. He is presently a Resident Arbitrator and Mediator at Arbitration Place where he has engaged in a number of commercial disputes and public arbitrations. He is a member arbitrator for the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada (SDRCC) and a member arbitrator of the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC).
The Honourable Robert P. Armstrong was appointed directly from the Bar to the Court of Appeal for Ontario on January 25, 2002. He served on that court until March 6, 2013. During his eleven years on the court he sat on cases covering a wide range of commercial, civil, public, administrative, and criminal law matters.
Before his appointment to the Court of Appeal, Mr. Armstrong was engaged in a busy litigation practice at Torys. His practice also covered a variety of matters including cases at all levels of court and before arbitrators and administrative tribunals. He appeared at both the trial and appellate levels including the Court of Appeal for Ontario, the Federal Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada. He also acted as commission counsel to a number of commissions of inquiry.
While at the Bar Mr. Armstrong was an active member of several legal organizations. He was Treasurer (Head) of the Law Society of Upper Canada from1999 to 2001. He is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a former member of its Board of Regents for a brief period prior to his appointment to the court. He was the chair and president of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Legal Studies from 2003 to 2014, which sponsors the Cambridge Lectures and Les Journées Strasbourgeoises in Strasbourg, France.
Since his time on the Court of Appeal, Mr. Armstrong has been a resident Arbitrator and Mediator at Arbitration Place. He has been engaged in a number of commercial disputes as well as acting as Arbitrator in a public arbitration involving the Ontario Blue Box Program. He is a member arbitrator for the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada (SDRCC) and a member arbitrator of the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC).
Mr. Armstrong received an honours B.A. from Carleton University, an M.A. and an LL.B from the University of Toronto and an Honorary LL.D from the Law Society of Upper Canada
