The Honourable Joseph R. Nuss, Q.C.
Joseph R. Nuss, Q.C. is an independent arbitrator and mediator in the fields of Canadian and International Commercial Arbitration and Mediation. He is Senior Counsel with the Montreal firm Woods LLP since December 2009. In addition to his being appointed to act as arbitrator and mediator, he was named Claims Officer “In the Matter of a Plan of Compromise or Arrangement of AbitibiBowater et al.” involving the restructuring and reorganization of the AbitibiBowater group of companies.
Mr. Nuss was a judge of the Quebec Court of Appeal from May 1995 to November 2009 where, amongst the cases he heard, were ones involving commercial and financial matters of significant importance. Prior to his appointment to the bench, he was a lawyer, specializing in litigation, who appeared as counsel before the Supreme Court of Canada, the Federal Court and all the Courts of Quebec as well as before federal and provincial administrative tribunals. He was also counsel before a number of Federal Commissions of Inquiry. As a judge, Mr. Nuss acted as a mediator within the framework of the system of mediation established in the Quebec Court of Appeal. He has delivered lectures on mediation at national and international conferences.
Mr. Nuss is a member of the Quebec Bar, the Canadian Bar Association and is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He is also a member of the International Bar Association, the London Court of International Arbitration and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Arbitration Committee.
He is fluently bilingual in English and French and also speaks Italian.
